i'm sad to say that when she was alive i knew all about her unflattering image in the media and absolutely nothing about her music. the day she died i listened to her music for the first time. my jaw literally dropped. her voice was from another planet. nobody sings like that here. all in one i heard aretha and billie and janis and ella as if she was channeling their voices from thin air. it's a shame that so much attention was paid to her public figure. the voice was timeless and haunting.
